What is DeMolay?
DeMolay International is a global youth leadership organization for young men aged 12 to 21, founded in 1919 by Frank S. Land in Kansas City, Missouri. Named after Jacques de Molay, the last Grand Master of the Knights Templar, the organization draws inspiration from Masonic traditions but operates independently. Its mission is to cultivate leadership, civic responsibility, and moral character through mentorship, ritual, and community service. DeMolay has expanded internationally, with active chapters across North and South America, Europe, and Asia, including countries like the United States, Canada, Brazil, and Albania.
The organization emphasizes seven core virtues: filial love, reverence for sacred things, courtesy, comradeship, fidelity, cleanliness, and patriotism. These values are instilled through structured programs and ceremonies designed to develop ethical and civic-minded leaders. Members participate in various activities, including public speaking, community service, and leadership training, fostering personal growth and a commitment to societal contribution.
Each local DeMolay chapter is sponsored by a Masonic body and guided by adult advisors, often Freemasons or former DeMolays, ensuring a supportive environment for youth development. The organizational structure includes elected youth officers and appointed adult mentors, promoting a balance of peer leadership and experienced guidance. DeMolay International continues to empower young men worldwide, encouraging them to lead lives of integrity, service, and excellence.
